Hackney: 34 Broadway Market Occupation

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Shutting down local resources like Tony's cafe and Spirit's shop is a message to the area's less affluent inhabitants and it's not pretty when you spell it out. Last night the torrent of questions and demands from the audience let the council know that the feeling is mutual and that we have an equally strong message for them. It was made plain to Ms Crowe that, if the council thinks the community response to Tony's eviction has been vociferous, they should think about the likely reaction if Spirit is kicked out onto the street.

However lame the council have been so far, we hope that they may yet recall their supposed job as representatives of local people. They could start by intervening to make sure a less callous deal is cut with Spirit and Tony. We are even more confident that everyone who attended the meeting will be as inspired as we are and will make sure that the pressure on the council and developers goes on growing.
