Palace letters reveal the Queen was not informed ahead of Gough Whitlam's dismissal
The release of more than 200 previously unseen letters between former Governor-General Sir John Kerr and Buckingham Palace have revealed that the controversial sacking of Gough Whitlam in 1975 was executed “without informing the palace in advance”. Writing to Queen Elizabeth II's private secretary after the dismissal, Kerr said "it was better for Her Majesty not to know". The "Palace letters", which for 45 years were kept under lock and key as private documents, were released to the public on Tuesday morning.
