Seeger
cleared

A THREE-JUDGE panel of
the US Circuit Court of
Appeals last month unani
mously reversed the convic-
tion imposed last year on folk
singer Pete Seeger for refus-
ing to answer questions during
a 1957 investigation by a sub-
committee of the House Un-
American Activities Committee.

In the same week, the US Sup-
reme Court in five to two majority
decisions voided six other convic-
tions on similar charges.
In all cases the Courts held that
the indictments had been defective
because they had "failed to identify
the subject under inquiry at the
time the witness was interrogated."
The reversal of these convictions
is hailed in the United States as
an important victory, in which
world wide protests played a significant part.
