Bernie Steer Dockland

 'Dockland'

Cranes standing still, no work for them No movement, a monument to times past. Silhouette outlined against a London sky.

Their reflection, mirrored in the waters of a silent dock. Casting their shadows across the decks of pleasure yachts.

Like a cancer spreading, with unchecked speed,

Wharves, warehouses closed overnight

Transformed, renovated

Not for people who have no place to live,

But for those who with obscene ease,

Sail their yachts whenever they please .

From the poem by Bernie Steer, 1974;

Bernie Steer was one of the 'Pentonville Five'—London dockers imprisoned for contempt of court in 1972

Cinema Action created 'Arise Ye Workers' during the dispute winning Best Documentary at the Leipzig Film Festival.
